Preparation is definitely the key... So with less that 2 weeks to go before our road trip starts I thought I best get my act together and see about organising some locum work.
Last week my HMR accreditation finally came through yay! I started the course before falling pregnant back in 2012 and slowly worked my way through. So it took me 2 years to finish it. (See my section on AACP accreditation here).
Anyways back to the locum thing. So once this came through I updated my resume and starting emailing it out. I had been scrolling through SEEK earlier in the week and had come across an ad for a locum pharmacist near Mackay. The ad was posted by QNA Healthcare who mainly advertise for locum nurses but had branched out to pharmacists too. The position had already been filled but I had a lovely chat with Feijke (not sure how to pronounce) and she gave me some tips and asked that I forward her my details and the dates we will be in certain areas. You never know what might come up..
A few months ago I had also emailed a pharmacist owner I know in Brisbane to see if he had any work around Dec/Jan. He gave me the details of a lady who looked after a large number of pharmacies across Brisbane/Gold Coast. I emailed her & within a day I had some work lined up on the Gold Coast in early Jan. They use Minfos which is great as that is what I'm currently using (even though it is probably one of the worst dispensing programs I've used - like anything it becomes second nature). The only downside to this is that we don't have any accommodation lined up. Being peak season, all the caravan parks are booked out and the holiday rentals are more than we are willing to pay. (Maybe we'll have to just splurge out and book a unit!) So I asked for $40/hr but was told the pay rate for locums is $35/hr. Its interesting to see what the rates are in different areas...I have locumed for $50/hr before (sounds crazy right?) Funnily enough when I first started working as a junior in 2003 our full-time pharmacist was on $50/hr and had his accommodation paid for as well!)
Anyway, I was going to take the job regardless of the pay... But there's no harm in asking right?
At the end of the day this trip is about experiences and learning opportunities. It's not about money. I think we would probably do ok without the locum work.. But a little extra always helps.. Especially when its raining/snowing/heat wave etc and we want to book into a unit for a few days to get our sanity back.
